How to Start Kart Racing in the Rotax Max Challenge

STEP 1: Choose you category:

First thing you have to know is what category of kart racing is for you. To do this the main thing you have to know is your age. Below is the age you have to be to take part in the different rotax categories:

  • MicroMax: 8 - 12 years old
  • Junior Max: 13 - 16
  • Senior Max and DD2: 15 years old and above.
  • Max Masters: 32 years old and above.

For the 8-12 year old and the choice is clear cut, as it is for 13 to 15 year olds.

For the 15-16 year old drivers their choice between Junior or Senior Max is largely down to their weight. If they weigh over 65kg they will be overweight in the Juniors and would be better off going to the Senior category.

For the older drivers there is more choice. The Max Masters and Senior use the exact same engine and kart, so the choice is simply down to age and Masters aged drivers can still choose to race the Senior drivers if they crave tougher competition.

The DD2 us a completely different category with a more powerful engine and 2 gears. It is meant for those looking for the ultimate thrill and more challenge with the gears.

STEP 2: Get a Kart, Join a Team

The next step is getting yourself a kart! A lot depends on your budget, you can go for a used kart, although it’s generally not recommended to buy anything older than 2 years because what you save you will probably end up spending on spare parts. You can also buy brand new, and with the Rotax engine this gives you the comfort of a warranty in case you have a failure.

You are also left with the option of taking care of the kart yourself or having a team do that for you. Both methods can be equally successful - the choice usually comes down to your budget, time constraints, and interests to tinker with karts.

In Malaysia KRS Motorsports can help you get started, whether you simply want to get advice, buy a kart, or join our racing team! You can also get in touch with KRS if you don’t live in Malaysia and we can point you in the right direction to get your first kart.

STEP 3: Practice, Practice, Practice

You don’t want to enter your first race before you are prepared. The reason is that you might struggle so much that you get frustrated, and when that happens you’re not enjoying it! Once you are within about 1 second of the fast drivers on the track you can consider entering your first race.

STEP 4: Get a License

Before you can race in the Rotax Max Challenge or other sanctioned race events you need to get yourself a racing license. This is a simple procedure and is explained in more detail HERE.
