BRP Rotax and the Max Challenge
BRP Rotax began their involvement in karting back in the 1980’s when they produced a limited number of high performance 100cc engines for racing purposes. Just being involved wasn’t enough for Rotax - they were also highly competitive, for example taking 9 out of the top 10 positions in the 1988 CIK Karting World Championship.
In 1997 Rotax launched the “Max” Engines, and in 1999 they launched their own racing series - the Rotax Max Challenge - which is raced in countries all over the world and culminates in a Grand Final race into which the top drivers from national and regional Max Challenge are invited to take part to determine the overall Max Challenge Champions.
The Rotax Max engines including other versions for such as the Mini-Max, Junior-Max, and DD2 as well as the Rotax Max Challenge have changed the face of the Karting World. The Rotax Grand Finals are considered to be the largest most international karting event on the calendar. Over 200 drivers from over 50 countries take part in the racing.
Be Part Of It! Rotax Max Challenge Asia & Malaysia
Rotax Kart racing is for drivers of all ages. The Rotax Max Challenge Asia and Malaysia consist of 4 categories. The MicroMax, Junior, and Senior categories utilize the same basic engine with some differences, while the DD2 category has an innovative engine concept.
DD2
The most powerful of the Rotax categories the DD2 is an innovation in karting engine technology. There is no chain connecting the engine to the rear axle, rather the engine is connected directly to the engine. This means less of a mess from chain lube - and no chain breakages or sprocket wear. Additionally the excitement and performance factors of this 32.6hp engine are increased with a 2-gear gearbox requiring drivers to shift several times every lap.
The DD2 category which is suitable for ages 15 and above also use a special kart chassis which are specifically built for the category by a number of kart manufacturers.
Senior Max
The Senior max category is a premier Rotax category alongside DD2. It is also for ages 15 and above. It is powered by a 28.5hp engine propelling the kart to speeds approaching 110kph on most kart tracks.
Masters
Utilizing the exact same regulations and engine as the Senior Max category, the Masters category is ages 32 and above only. This provides the “old guys” with their separate category without having to worry about competing against 20 teenagers.
Junior Max
The Junior Max category provides high intensity racing for drivers aged 13-16. The 20.4hp Junior engine is very similar to the Senior engine, with only a few differences to keep the power down. Upgrading a Junior engine to Senior configuration is simple when a driver decides to race in Senior Max.
MicroMax
This category with a 6.8hp engine is for kids getting into karting. Drivers aged 8-12 can get their first feel for karting and learn the fundamentals of racecraft. The engine is again very similar to the Junior engine with a few restrictions.
